Contraindications
Private Wellness offers powerful recovery modalities. These are not appropriate for everyone. If any item on this page applies to you, do not book a session until you have consulted your physician and obtained written clearance.
Dry sauna (170–190°F)
Intense dry heat places acute load on your cardiovascular and thermoregulatory systems. Avoid if you:
- are pregnant or may be pregnant;
- have uncontrolled high or low blood pressure;
- have any form of heart disease, arrhythmia, unstable angina, or a history of stroke;
- have been advised against vigorous exercise by a physician;
- are taking beta-blockers, diuretics, or other medications that affect thermoregulation;
- have epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or another condition that impairs heat tolerance;
- have open wounds, active skin infection, or severe sunburn;
- have consumed alcohol or recreational drugs within the preceding 6 hours; or
- feel unwell, feverish, or dehydrated today.
Red-light therapy
Photobiomodulation is well-tolerated by most adults, but avoid if you:
- have a history of photosensitive skin disorders (e.g. lupus, porphyria);
- are taking photosensitizing medication (tetracyclines, retinoids, St John's wort, and others);
- have active skin cancer or undiagnosed skin lesions in the treatment area;
- have had recent cosmetic procedures (laser, peels, injectables) within the past 2 weeks; or
- have had recent eye surgery or a retinal condition — always wear the supplied goggles.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)
PEMF is contraindicated for individuals who:
- have a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, cochlear implant, insulin pump, or any other implanted electronic medical device;
- are pregnant;
- have an active tumour or history of recent cancer treatment;
- have a metal implant or pin in the area being treated (some are safe, some are not — ask your surgeon);
- are experiencing active bleeding or have a bleeding disorder; or
- have epilepsy.
Compression boots
Pneumatic compression is contraindicated if you:
- have, or are at risk of, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism;
- have active cellulitis, infection, or open wounds on the legs;
- have peripheral arterial disease or severe peripheral neuropathy;
- have severe heart failure, pulmonary edema, or recent lower-limb surgery; or
- are pregnant.
General safety rules
- Hydrate before and after every session. Bring water.
- Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, nauseated, or unwell, stop the protocol and leave the room.
- Do not exceed 30 minutes in the sauna. Build tolerance gradually over multiple visits.
